Cantilever Stairs

Precast Concrete Cantilever Staircases

A Floating Masterpiece in Architectural Design.

Cantilever staircases may have originated centuries ago, but today they are celebrated for their contemporary elegance and architectural impact. With their signature floating effect and minimalist profile, concrete cantilever stairs offer a discreet yet dramatic solution for modern luxury interiors.

Whether you’re developing an exclusive property or envisioning a sculptural centrepiece for your own home, a Kallisto cantilever staircase delivers both form and function, with uninterrupted space and refined engineering.

How Cantilever Stairs Work

Unlike traditional staircases, cantilever stairs create the illusion that each tread floats unsupported a a visual feat achieved through clever engineering. But not all cantilever staircases work the same way.

There are two primary structural approaches:

  1. Wall-Anchored Treads – In this model, each step is anchored into a structural wall using internal steel pins or brackets. The wall itself carries the load, allowing the treads to project outward with no visible supports. This design is often seen in floating staircases with open risers and no balustrades. (Shown in this photograph.)

  2. Compression-Based Systems – In this approach, each tread bears on the one below it, forming a stable, compressive stack built into an adjacent curved wall. Rather than relying on anchorage, the system works by transferring load downward through the structure. This allows for exceptionally slim stair profiles – with concrete waists as fine as 50mm – while maintaining strength, stability, and aesthetic purity. (Show in photograph below.)

At Kallisto, we specialise in the second type – a precast concrete system that delivers the beauty of cantilevered design with the robust performance of compression-based engineering.

Engineered for Minimalism, Designed for Luxury

The hallmark of a cantilever staircase is its seamless integration into a space. It enhances your architectural environment without competing with it, creating a sense of openness and effortless flow. Ideal for:

  • Luxury residential properties
  • Prestige developments
  • High-end interior renovations

With no visible supports and space left open underneath, cantilever stairs offer freedom to incorporate feature wallslighting designs, or custom flooring that would be obscured by a conventional stair structure.

At Kallisto, each staircase is made to measure, designed in collaboration with your team to meet your exact vision. All elements are precision-cast in our Essex facility and delivered as part of our end-to-end managed service.

We collaborate closely with architects, interior designers, developers, and private clients, ensuring every staircase reflects your unique vision. From early design consultation through to final installation, we manage the entire process with precision and discretion.

Why Choose a Precast Concrete Cantilever Staircase?

  • Expertly engineered for safety, strength and stability
  • Designed to complement contemporary and minimalist interiors
  • Manufactured off-site to ensure quality control and minimal waste
  • Tailored to your property and delivered ready for installation
  • Trusted by developers, architects and private clients across the UK

Our approach gives you the aesthetic impact of a luxury floating staircase, with the practicality and durability of precast concrete.

Compared to in-situ methods or alternative materials like steel or timber, precast concrete offers numerous advantages:

  • Cost-effective and long-lasting
  • Inherently fire resistant
  • Excellent acoustic insulation
  • Safe and load-bearing from the moment of installation
  • Easily finished with timber, marble, stone, tiles, or carpet

Important Considerations

Before specifying a cantilever staircase, it is essential that the adjacent wall is confirmed as structural and load-bearing. We strongly recommend consulting with a qualified structural engineer or technician early in the design phase to ensure feasibility and safety.
